install program called "install". Click this to install Catalyzer.
For Linux Catalyzer is available as an .rpm file. Either install the rpm file using
a graphical software manager or install it from the command line as root by typing rpm -i catalyzerXXX.rpm
For Unix Catalyzer is available as a .sh file. Run it in your shell, preferably as root.
New Features in Catalyzer 2.2
The main changes in Catalyzer 2.2 are in catalog management and stability/performance.
Catalog management
Catalogs now live on
Catalyzer Server rather than on a local or network drive. This means
that catalogs can be shared, with the server ensuring that only one
person at a time can edit the catalog. (It is still possible to
import and export catalogs from and to disk, but it is not
recommended).
Catalyzer users thinking of upgrading to 2.2.0 should look at
the online documentation
to see how this may enable new, more efficient workflows
Stability and Performance
Catalyzer Desktop is significantly more stable (in fact, it
should never crash) and performs significantly faster on large
catalogs for record editing and adding operations
New Features in Catalyzer 2.1
Main extensions in Catalyzer are to support inventory tracking and image
annotations.
Support for Bar-code Scanners and Printers
Catalyzer now provides support for a variety of bar-code scanners and label
printers for inventory and specimen tracking applications.
Gallery View
Gallery view allows thumbnails of many images, together with optional
captions, to be viewed and browsed in a single window. Gallery view may be used
to view the images that are associated with a single folder, the images
resulting from a search, or all the images in a catalog.
LDAP Support
Catalyzer Server can integrate with existing LDAP servers for user
management and authentication.
Audit Trails
Catalyzer Server may be used to track audit trails for a catalog or
database.
Inverse References
Catalyzer automatically tracks inverse references, allowing users to find
all the objects referring to an object without resorting to searches.
Default Values
Fields in Catalyzer may now have default values associated with them, making
data entry more efficient for records containing common values.
Read-only Fields
Fields in Catalyzer may now be set as read-only, preventing them from being
accidently altered by users. This feature is primarily intended for meta-data
and other non-mutable values extracted from instruments or imported from
external files.
Support for various new file formats and plug-ins
New Features in Catalyzer 2.0
The primary improvement for this release was the development of a new scalable web server.
Desktop to Server Publishing
Catalyzer Desktop now provides the ability to upload catalogs to a remote server.
On-line Resource Archiving
Resources associated with Catalyzer can be optionally uploaded to the server so that all
relevant data is archived in the same place.
Multi-user Login and Access Control
Catalyzer server requires user registration and login for most functions and users can
control who has the rights to view and edit their catalogs.
Multi-catalog Searching
Catalyze server is capable of indexing and searching against any number of catalogs.
Catalog Versioning
Catalyzer Server can store and browse multiple versions of the same catalog.
Known issues
- Downloaded catalogs cannot link to server resource files.
New Features in Catalyzer 1.2
This release is a major step forward from Catalyzer 1.1. this list summarizes the most
significant individual developments.
1 Performance
Users of Catalyzer 1.1 will note that the user interface is considerably more responsive and
file save, load and publishing times have been reduced substantially.
2 Additional Biomedical and Image File Importers
Catalyzer 1.2 adds file importers for Flow Cytometry (FCS) and Electrophysiology (Axograph,
PClamp, Spike). It also has improved file importers for Scanalytics IPLab (IPL), Zeiss
(LSM), Leica (LEI), TIFF, and JPEG.
3 Table View
Whereas before Catalyzer would only show a single record on a page, now you can see multiple
records in a table, much as you do with a spreadsheet. You can edit the records using most
of the features (menus, checkboxes, date choosers) that are available for the single page
record views, and you can also edit most features of the classes from controls on the column
headings.
4 Resource Handling
The second major change is in Catalyzer's ability to maintain reliable links to files that
may be moved around on the file system, copied or even renamed. Behind the scenes, the new
resource handling architecture keeps track of the actual contents of a file. This means that
when you make references to a file from a catalog, you can be sure of what file you are
talking about. IF the file is moved, you can instruct Catalyzer to r relocate it from a set
of possible locations based on the actual content.
The same system can be used for manual correction of resources. For example, if you remount
a CD under a different root, then you can correct this in just one place and all the links
are valid again.
5 Search
Catalog can now be searched both with simple text matching or by building up complex logical
querie. Support for searching numbers and dates has been added.
Known Issues
Problems have been reported running Catalyzer with the latest Linux kernel (2.6) as shipped
with SuSE Linux 9.1. These are under investigation, but if you experience unexpected
behaviour, please contact us.
