Catalyzer is letting the user do it. It's not technically complicated for the user to understand how to implement their data structures in Catalyzer.

Overview

The Catalyzer-based electronic lab notebook (ELN)is an electronic data capture (EDC) application for biology and biomedical research. It helps clinicians, scientists and managers capture data generated in the clinical or research process in an electronic form. With user-configurable data entry forms, unique and powerful abilities to link diverse kinds of data, and backed by a server for archiving and sharing captured data, it is the first electronic lab notebook/electronic data capture platform which truly has the power to capture complex biomedical and biology data flows. The family of data format-specific plug-ins automatically extract metadata from instrument and software-generated data files, and place these in fields in the notebook. Catalyzer lab notebook/data capture systems integrate with a number of external systems and applications by supporting links to external web-service databases, launching external, data format-specific applications, and export of data in various formats such as pdf or html. Powerful search capabilities are included. As with other Catalyzer-based systems, the server component allows captured data to be accessed via the web under strictly controlled, and user-configurable, access conditions.
