The Catalyzer-based specimen-tracking application draws
on the power of Catalyzer as an inventory management
tool, and adds integration with popular shipping methods
such as FedEx or UPS. With
the addition of a tracking component, this system forms the
core of a multi-site sample tracking system. This
components was developed in response to the needs of the
rapidly growing areas of biobanking and distributed clinical trials. A biobank's value is
bound up in the samples and specimens collected during
clinical trials and other forms of medical research.
These trials involve a variety of individuals - often working
for multiple institutions - creating and handling a wide
range of specimens, samples and associated data during a
study. Because of the complex, dynamic and extended nature
of the studies, effective management and tracking of these
samples and data requires a flexible and user-configurable
data management system.
The Catalyzer specimen tracking application
is used to organise, enter and make
web-accessible the specimen data. Specimens are trackable
at point of origin and destination, and simple scanning
enables verification that all sent items have been
received.
